I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, to be laid before Mr. Secretary Lyttelton, a copy of correspondence, as marked in the margin, with His Majesty's Customs, respecting the sale of the Steamship "Ohio" to Mr. Frederick J. Bardens of Kobe, which vessel, it is rumoured is to be eventually transferred to the Japanese Government.

It will be seen that the vessel sailed from Cardiff on the 31st ultimo for Hongkong.

As at present advised, Lord Lansdowne does not think that any action is called for in the matter on the part of His Majesty's Government, but Mr. Secretary Lyttelton may possibly think it desirable to apprize the Colonial Authorities of the impending arrival of the vessel at Hongkong, in order that some observation...
